JOBBOX.io is putting a twist on tech recruiting. Everybody seems to win. I talked with their co-founder Pedro Carmo Oliveira.
In a nutshell, what is JOBBOX.io and how did the idea come about?
JOBBOX.io allows companies to source techies through referrals.
Referrers get rewarded by leveraging their own network to help a friend get hired. Indeed, referral recruitment is a system that really works well because it ferrets out all those unpredictable, hidden and complex connections that exist between people in everyday life.
JOBBOX.io is not one of those “shower ideas”. It actually was the result of a continuous customer development and pre-sales process the founders emerged themselves for about almost six months. We are trying to solve the question “How to fix tech recruitment?”. As we’ve found out, employers already use referrals as the perfect tool to guarantee hiring quality as well as speed. Therefore, we’ve decided to digitalise and democratise that solution. www.jobbox.io was the result.
What is the main advantage of the referral/reward system when compared to regular job sites?
In one word? Quality. The level of trust that a recommendation brings to an application is gigantic, it’s so much different when compared to a direct application sent to an employers without any context whatsoever. This factor becomes exponential if the referrer is somehow related to the employer!
How has the business been growing lately?
Dropping some numbers:
– We’ve grown to countries like US, Brasil, UK, Germany and Sweden.
– We’ve had people from New York and San Francisco referring friends to work in São Paulo. That’s pretty cool, I guess.
– Don’t take my word for it, check our testimonials video.
Are you looking to expand to include jobs outside the tech sector?
We’ve had people asking us to expand to areas like medicine or management. Definitely something to look into in the near future. Right now we’re focused on tech jobs. Aka jobs for data scientists, developers, UX, digital marketeers, growth hackers, hardware engineers, etc.
What do you wish you had known when you first started?
I wish I’d had the knowledge to take a step back and start doing stuff like brand persona and user persona. Instead of entering execution-mode on full-speed mode, I’d rather take a step back and prepare a bit better. But, well, nothing is perfect and that’s the fun part of it. As our advisor, Domingos Guimarães, usually says: “a startup is a work in progress”.
What other startup is on your radar and why?
We curate a twitter list for cool tech startup: https://twitter.com/JOBBOX_io/lists/cool-tech-startups. I’ll pin-point a few of them: Talkdesk, Codacy, Slack (we use it and love it), Women.com, WunderCar, Unbabel and Seedrs. I think all these startups have huge growth potential and, of course, some of them are smart enough to already use JOBBOX.io 🙂
