What role does Artificial Intelligence play in what you do?
It plays a big role. A lot of Unbabel is powered by AI and will continue to be so.
How has the Y Combinator backing affected your development?
Tremendously. In the goals we set, in the growth of the company, in the valuation of the company. Valuation of the company was more than 7 times what it was when it started.
What was the biggest challenge you faced to get the startup going?
A startup is by definition hard. It is great, exciting and really hard. WE face big challenges every week. Growing 10% a week, for example, is really hard. Comes with the territory.
What are your growth expectations for 2014?
Become cash flow positive. Keep growing 10% per week.
Will Unbabel mean the end of human translation as we know it?
No, there will always be space for human translation as a craft, a lot of content requires very specialised knowledge. But we are to translation what Ready-to-wear was to tailors. Translation will become a much more regular part of our life.
What other startup is on your radar and why?
Gengo as competitors. They are executing well and have significant funding. Beacon as a way to help journalism and Kimono Labs as away to structure the web.
