I may have told this story before.
Early September 2001, I went to a Web conference in San Francisco. It was a great event, and I got to know great people.
On the 10th, on my way back, I made a stop in New York City to change planes. While landing, I was chatting to the gentleman next to me, and we commented on the NYC skyline. I told him I had been at the top of the Twin Towers in May that year.
Back in Lisbon, while returning from lunch on the 11th (9am in NY) I started hearing the news on the radio, and couldn’t believe my ears. “But, I was there just yesterday!” I thought. It was like a bad dream. I immediately emailed the friends I’d made at the Conference, and all were okay, thankfully.
This is an event that will stick with me forever, having just returned from there. Had I come back one day later, I would have been stranded in the US for a week, if not something worse.
[…] I was to briefly stop by New York in September (YES) 2011, on the way back from San Francisco, as I wrote elsewhere. […]
