Most of us love to travel, I’m assuming. And most of us take care of planning online, I’m also assuming. Tripaya is a site that proposes to make this process much easier. I chatted with founder André Ramos to find out more about it.
What is Tripaya and how did the idea come about?
Tripaya is a new travel site that makes it easier than ever to plan a trip or vacation. For a long time, travel sites focused primarily on finding people the most budget-friendly flights and hotels, but Tripaya is expanding to help people choose destinations as well.
Being avid travelers, the founders started to face a problem when searching for their trips took more time than enjoying the trip itself. When it comes to planning a trip, it’s hard not to go to the same places over and over again, and sometimes you just need some inspiration. So we started to imagine what the perfect travel site would be. Tripaya has taken the daydreaming aspect a step further by allowing its users to search destinations by interests and budget. Tripaya was created by travelers, for travelers.
The user sets their budget and a type of trip and the site does the rest. What kind of system have you put together to give people the best options?
Tripaya is aimed for those who seek inspiration. In a way, we can consider Tripaya as an advisor, since we are suggesting destinations, flights and hotels to our users, according to their preferences. What our algorithm does is compare hundreds of travel sites in seconds to deliver the best solutions to our clients, so they don’t have to do the work themselves. We keep in mind that different users have different needs. For some the best option might be the cheapest. But for others it might be the flight time, or even the weather. So, we give our users the possibility to sort the results according to some filters, so they can easily find their best trip, according to their needs.
In a time of instant gratification, do you think people want to decide less and less?
The problem is that we have more and more offer, and instead of helping, it is really being an obstacle. There’s a study from Expedia saying that the average traveler spends 45 days when booking a trip, and in the process they browse 38 different sites. How crazy is that? Our main goal with Tripaya is to reduce this to just 1 site in a couple of minutes. So, you go to Tripaya, you type your budget and interests, and in just two clicks you have your trip booked.
What are your growth plans for the remainder of 2016?
We have an extensive road map 🙂 We are always near our users, hearing them and improving Tripaya to better serve them. In the last month we made a huge improvement, expanding our offer from only destinations in Europe, to destinations worldwide. We’ll keep adding new features and partners, so Tripaya becomes better and better, and our users can expect a lot of new features in the upcoming months.
What’s your take on the Portuguese startup scene today?
Portuguese Entrepreneurs and all the agents (accelerators, incubators, etc..) are doing a really impressive job. When you have the Web Summit coming to Lisbon, that’s the best postcard we can have to describe Portuguese ecosystem.
If you were starting right now, what would you do differently?
Well, I would say the biggest mistake we made and certainly would make it differently, is making sure we find the best people to work with. It would have saved us a lot of time and work. And I’m not talking about hard skills, because that can be improved. It’s really important you find a team that shares the same vision and gets the culture of your company.
