Time sure flies by. It’s hard to believe that the World Wide Web was invented 25 years ago to this day. The man responsible for was was Tim Berners-Lee, while working at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory, in 1989.
He proposed a system where pages sitting on web servers would be connected via hyperlinks, as a way to share information.
We have come a long way since then. Browsers have come and gone, websites have evolved from simple text pages to fully functional web apps, and broadband has made access much faster. But we aren’t done yet. As Berners-Lee recently stated “If we want a Web that is truly for everyone, then everyone must play a role in shaping its next 25 years”.
We, in the developed world, take the web for granted. There are some who propose it should even be classified as a Human Right. But there is still a long way to go before it reaches the whole world. I believe we’re getting closer by the day. Here’s to the future.
