Adam Braun had a promising Wall Street career. But, somehow, it wasn’t enough. So, he did something about it and is changing the world.
In “The Promise of a Pencil” he takes us step by step through his journey, from the initial idea (and only 25$ in the bank), to having built over 200 schools in countries in need, greatly impacting education and quality of life.
The seed for his “for-purpose” organization (he dislikes the expression “non-profit”) was planted in India, when he asked a small boy what he wanted most in the world. He expected the answer to be “a toy”, but the boy responded “a pencil”. That gave Adam the name for his project, “Pencils of Promise“, and he hasn’t stopped since.
The book is divided into 30 “mantras”, each with a main central idea. Just a few examples are “Get out of your comfort zone”, “Speak the language of the person you want to become” and “If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough”.
This is one of the most inspiring books I’ve read, on how to find something you’re passionate about, go after it, and really make a difference in the world.
