I love a good rags to riches story. It never fails to inspire me. The feeling of “If she can so it, so can I” comes to mind and motivates me to do better.
I came to know Barbara Corcoran a while ago, when I finally started watching “Shark Tank”. By the way, it’s a show every entrepreneur should watch. You’ll learn a lot and see many good examples of what to do and what not to do.
This book is divided into two main parts. In the first part, Barbara goes through her life story, from living with her 9 siblings in a small house, to building a billion dollar real estate business and being named “The Queen of New York real estate”. Every chapter tells a different episode of her journey that she parallels with an episode from her childhood. After 23 unsuccessful jobs, she started her own business with a $1000 loan from her then boyfriend and never stopped.
The second part of the book is dedicated to 14 more lessons, inspired by her participation in “Shark Tank”. She tells us of several entrepreneurs, of what she saw in them, and why she invested.
In the whole book, she stresses the phenomenal role her mother played in her life, sharing great advice with her from an early age.
Another aspect of note is that, if you want to succeed, you must work your butt off. There is no other way. There are no shortcuts.
This is a very easy book to read with fun and insightful short chapters. I took away more than a couple of good ideas I will implement on my projects.
