“Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)—also referred to as motor neurone disease (MND), is a neurodegenerative disease. It is characterised by muscle spasticity, rapidly progressive weakness due to muscle atrophy, difficulty in speaking (dysarthria), swallowing (dysphagia), and breathing (dyspnea)” (Wikipedia)
This is a serious, almost always fatal disease, affecting many people. It is not as well-known as it should be, and no cure has been found so far.
A very good friend of mine died from ALS, so I know first hand how hard it is for the person and those around her.
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is a great initiative that is taking the world, and social media, by storm. Many many people, known and unknown have accepted the challenge, contributed to the cause, and helped raise awareness.
Here are some videos of people who took the challenge. You may recognize a couple of them.
Bill Gates
Mark Zuckerberg
Lady Gaga
Mark Schaefer (with a twist)
Oprah
